Introduction
In one of the largest consumer compensation cases in Canadian history, a $500 million settlement has been approved in a class action lawsuit involving alleged bread price-fixing. The case centers around major grocery chains accused of artificially inflating the price of packaged bread over a span of two decades.
Background of the Case
Between 2001 and 2015, several major retailers—including Loblaw Companies Ltd. and its parent company George Weston Ltd.—were accused of participating in an industry-wide conspiracy to fix the price of packaged bread products. This included everyday items like bagged bread, buns, rolls, bagels, naan, English muffins, wraps, pita, and tortillas.
In May 2025, Ontario Superior Court Judge Ed Morgan approved a $500 million settlement, calling it “excellent and fair” for Canadian consumers.
Who Is Eligible for Compensation?
