Who was Justine Siegemund?

Justine Siegemund (1636–1705) was a German midwife, obstetrician, and author who is best known for writing the first book on obstetrics by a woman, "Der schwangeren Frauen und Hebammen Rosengarten" (The Rose Garden of Pregnant Women and Midwives), published in 1690.

Siegemund was born in Prenzlau, Germany and trained as a midwife. She gained a reputation as an expert in her field and was eventually appointed as the court midwife to the Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. She also ran a successful midwifery practice and taught other women the art of obstetrics.
